Pack Hiking:
Pack Hiking is one of my greatest joys to participate in with my Swissies. It gives everyone the opportunity to be outdoors, stay in shape, and visit with friends all while we walk our dogs. An activity that most everyone can participate in and I strongly encourage.
Preparation is vital to success as the dogs will need to carry 20% to 30% of their body weight over designated legs. It requires approximately 6 weeks of training prior to the pack hike for both the dog and handler. The pack weight can be reduced throughout the hike for consumption of water and snacks for both the dog and handler.
Earning a Pack Dog Leg(s) Towards a Title:
Complete a ten mile hike, 8 mile hikes back to back days, or a 5 mile (each way) primitive overnight camping trip. The dog carries a sturdy back pack loaded with supplies.
The legs can then be applied towards appropriate titles:
- Novice Working Pack Dog (NWPD)
- Working Pack Dog (WPD)
- Working Pack Dog Excellent (WPDX)
